Rewilding Leadership: Growing Beyond Business as Usual with Regenerative Leadership | To Focus Executive Leadership Coaching & Sustainability Consultancy

Tree rings tell a story.

Each layer holds evidence of seasons of growth, challenge, and adaptation. We, too, carry our own "rings" - our experiences, lessons, and evolution over time.

Before I began working in leadership development 15 years ago, I spent years in PR, enthusiastically brainstorming ways to sell more chocolate bars or celebrating when a colleague successfully lobbied for a law that shaped what we could eat at motorway service stations. Those experiences—both inspiring and questionable—are part of my rings, just as your past shapes the leader you are today.

The past stays within us, just like those inner rings of a tree. But leadership isn’t about staying stuck in the past—it’s about continuing to grow, pushing outwards, even when it means challenging outdated mindsets and systems built on "business as usual."

This is the essence of regenerative leadership.

For many of the leaders we work with, this stage of their career is about more than just success—it’s about legacy and impact. The sap can rise again. There’s a renewed clarity about where to direct energy, a confidence in questioning the status quo, and a deeper understanding that long-term well-being—of people, organisations, and the planet—matters more than short-term profit.

But growth doesn’t happen in depleted soil. Leadership requires renewal. When we take our energy levels seriously and recognise that we are living organisms, not machines, we create the conditions to grow again.

A Leadership Model Ready for Renewal

  • Leadership Needs a Refresh – Too many leadership models remain stagnant, rooted in power and privilege rather than authentic growth and integrity.

  • Learning from Nature – Just as an ancient tree tells a story of resilience and adaptation, leaders can acknowledge their past rings while consciously choosing to grow in new directions.

  • Embracing Regenerative Leadership – Every leader has the potential for transformation. Especially those considering their legacy, who are ready to challenge conventional thinking and prioritise long-term impact over outdated norms.

Rewild Your Leadership

As you stand at this pivotal moment in your leadership journey, ask yourself: What legacy do I want to leave? This is the time to embrace transformation, to lead with courage, and to inspire others to follow.

The world doesn’t need more safe, predictable leadership. It needs visionaries willing to rewild their approach - leaders who dare to grow in new, regenerative ways.
